New buses en route to less pollution (STANDARD) 08月 31日 星期五 05:30AM
New World First Bus and Citybus are to spend HK$150 million on 28 double- decker buses which emit much fewer emissions, while improving exhaust filters for most of their other buses by the end of the year.
But a company spokesman admitted the 28 Euro IV-standard buses will only make up 2 percent of the company's fleet of close to 1,600 buses.
Citibus operations and engineering chief Paul Li Kwong-wai said yesterday the 28 buses will cost about HK$100 million.
They are fitted with engines which cut emissions through an advanced technology which converts nitrogen oxides into harmless water vapor and nitrogen gas.
The company is investing a further HK$50 million to install diesel particulate filters on all its Euro II buses.
The company owns 90 pre-Euro buses, 400 Euro I buses, 1,000 Euro II buses and 100 Euro III buses.
Li said the filters sharply decrease emission of particulates.
"With the diesel particulate filters, there will be no black smoke," Li said. SCARLETT CHIANG
